Paint Chip Poetry Prompt #30

It’s week 30 of the paint chip poetry prompt. My apologies for those of you who were looking for this prompt early this morning. Friday snuck up on me this week and I just realized I hadn’t posted this yet.

The Challenge

This week we are writing about childhood, about When I Was Little. Or I suppose if you are Alice, you could write about when you ate the cake and shrunk. Maybe you want to write about a time when you felt little. Or you could write a meta-poem from the perspective of a little poem.

The words and phrases to consider are turmeric, lazy lizard, potpourri, penny, old leather boots, sea serpent, and euphoria. This week I’d like to see poems using at least three of these words or phrases. And maybe, in childlike wonder, select words based on which colors you like best.

My Poem

I’ve decided to take my own challenge and pick only three words or phrases from this group. But I’m not picking based on the colors I like best. Quite the opposite, in fact.

As a Little Child

When I was a little child
and found a shiny penny
I skip off to the candy store
with my best friend Jenny

I had a pair from my dear dad
of comfy old leather boots
I'd wear them in the garden
to dig up radish and carrot roots

While digging and daydreaming
I spied a slow lazy lizard
We were both quite thankful that
the weather wasn't a blizzard

Your Turn

Now it’s your turn to see what you can come up with about being little using these interesting words and phrases. You can post your poem in the comments, or post it on your blog and then post a link in the comments. Be sure to link back here so others can find the prompt and play along. I’d also love it if you would share this post on your social media. The more players the more fun we’ll all have.

I am a Jesus Freak, and I don't care who knows it. I am a wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend. My blood family is only part of the larger family of Christ that I belong to. I love to write, especially about my dear Savior.

  1. Now if only I can think of how to put this idea into a poem. Maybe after a good nights sleep, I hope.

When I was little, I had a potpourri of Old Leather boots, past on to me by my big sister. As time went on, her euphoria was all about the color yellow! As in a Turmeric flower, bright yellow pennies, even the bright yellow of the Lazy Lizard.
How silly she is, me, I’ll stick with my dreams of Sea Serpents and Mermaids.
