Fire Season – An Elfje
The western United States experiences wildfires every year, but this year it seems to be particularly bad. Several firefighters have lost their lives fighting these blazes, some started by natural causes such as lightning strikes, others started by careless people. On our way to eastern Washington this weekend the sky was redder than I’ve ever seen it going through the Gorge, and I wondered if it was in part due to smoke from these wildfires. It inspired this short poem that I hope is a reminder to keep the brave men and women fighting these fires in our prayers.

Crimson
Twilight sky

Beautiful. I spent a summer in those mountains, working in the conservation corps. out in the wilderness we always looked forward to the times the fire crews were in camp with their high spirits and wicked humor, rather than out battling the fires. May they all stay safe.

My brother lives in Yarnell, AZ where wildfires took the lives of 19 young men and destroyed hundreds of houses..yes, wildfire burns eyes, and hearts with its destructive force. well done
One of those 19 was from my neighboring town, and so when his body was brought home and he was carried through our town the main streets were lined with flags and people paying their respects. Peace, Linda

I just recently made the trek from eastern Washington to the Olympic Peninsula, & I, too, took particular notice of that ominous smoke. I hope they can contain those fires soon. I hate to see nature fall victim to some people’s ignorance.

wild fire is scary stuff….it can change direction in the wind…i feel for those firemen…my grandfather was a fireman….

Here in Reno, we’ve been living with smoke from both the Yosemite and the American fire since August 11th…a sad, and daily reminder of these tragedies. My cousin’s husband is a forest service firefighter out of Bakersfield and is, no doubt, involved in one of them. I like that you remind us to pray for these heroic men and women.
oh heck…i’ve heard about the fires in the news.. the destruction is just terrible and kudos to those firefighters who risk their lives to save others
