Prophecy – A Poem
In pondering what to write for my Thankful Thursday poem, I couldn’t think of a synonym for thankful that I wanted to write about (not even using my online Thesaurus). So I decided instead to write about something I am thankful for. The thing that has been on my mind lately (which you might have noticed if you’ve read any recent posts) is prophecy.
There are so many prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament that I love to read. Although my faith is primarily grounded in my own experience with how Jesus has changed me and changed my life, the analytical part of me that sometimes has doubts needs something more. The fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies by Jesus, often times in ways He could not from a human perspective have controlled, provides the “something more” that answers any doubts. For that, I am eternally thankful.
Prophecy
Prophecy foretold His coming
Righteousness He would bestow
On all who called upon His name and His
Punishment took as their own
Humbly He bowed to the Father’s will
Emmanuel, whose blood was spilled
Could not be held by death, He rose
Yahweh saved, His promise fulfilled
One of my favorite prophecies concerning the crucifixion (besides Isaiah 53) is Psalm 22:
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs;
an evil gang closes in on me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
I can count all my bones.
My enemies stare at me and gloat.
They divide my garments among themselves
and throw dice for my clothing.
Psalm 22:16-18 (NIV).

Psalm 22 is about as direct as a prophecy can be and very comforting, indeed. How can skeptics see this as anything but evidence?
What about the rest of prophecy, the verses that haven’t been fulfilled yet? I think we have every reason to believe that since so many already have, the others will be, too. But what about symbolism and interpretation, especially in the books of Daniel and Revelation?
I believe, but it’s so complex… What do you think? : )
Linda, If there were only Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 as prophecy for Jesus’ death it would be enough for me. I don’t know how people can dismiss the many scriptures that prophecy His birth, death, and resurrection. I’ve studied the end times prophecies a little, but not enough to really be able to develop an opinion beyond believing that it will happen as God has planned. It is quite complex and I would love to learn more about it. But there is only so much time and I’ve decided it’s more important to understand how God wants me to live my life today and leave the end to Him. Peace, Linda
Wonderful thing to be thankful for and you do an amazing job at fitting a poem to it! I love knowing that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies in the Old Testament. I like your poem. I, too am thankful for prophecy. This comes to mind:
19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:19-21
“Thankful”? Hmmm…
Here is a word that I sometimes use: “Glad”…I am exceedingly glad that the Lord is patient when I doubt! 🙂
