Apple Stuffing for Recipe Friday

Last week I bought a package of stuffing from my local Safeway bakery. The other night I decided to make it to go with the Cornish game hens my son was making. The recipe on the package called for adding onions and celery, but I didn’t feel like cutting up onion. So I looked around the kitchen to see what I had available. The result was this recipe for Apple Stuffing. After dinner my husband said, “Always make your stuffing like that.” So I figured it was a recipe worth sharing.

You could probably use this to stuff a turkey, game hens, or pork chops (a concept I’ve never understood, but I’ve seen it done on the Food Network). But I made this as a casserole because the hens were partially frozen and I didn’t feel like trying to stuff them. Besides, they were my son’s part of the meal.


11 oz package seasoned Old Fashioned Stuffing
14.5 oz can chicken broth
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
2 small Honeycrisp apples, peeled and chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp marjoram


Melt butter. Saute celery, apple, and garlic until tender. Stir in marjoram. Put stuffing into large mixing bowl. Pour in chicken broth and stir. Add butter, celery, and apple mixture and stir. Spray the bottom of a 7″ x 11″ glass casserole dish with baking spray. Press stuffing into dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes or until top is crispy. Serve hot with your favorite entrée.

  1. Linda this sounds good! If not for my family, maybe to take! I tried some apple stuffing with pork chops once, and hubby didn’t like it. I shared it with my mom and she loved it.     • Deb, Your hubby sounds kinda picky! Mine will eat almost anything I cook. If he doesn’t like something I made, chances are I didn’t either. Also, if you don’t have Honeycrisp apples, you could probably use any sweet, red apple. They just happen to be my favorite variety and what I had in the fridge. Hope they like this wherever you take it for Thanksgiving. Peace, Linda
