A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

One of my fellow bloggers post a hymn every Sunday, and I love checking out which hymn he has chosen. Often it is a hymn I have never heard, but the lyrics are always wonderful. Because it is Reformation Sunday, I thought I would post a hymn of my own, one that is always sung in the Lutheran church on this day. It was written by Martin Luther, originally in German, and has been translated into English.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing.
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe.
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing,
Were not the right man on our side,
The man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He.
Lord Sabaoth, his name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him.
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure.
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers
Not thanks to them, abideth.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also.
The body they may kill,
God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever...

I am a Jesus Freak, and I don't care who knows it. I am a wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend. My blood family is only part of the larger family of Christ that I belong to. I love to write, especially about my dear Savior.

To read it is different than singing it.

I’m selfish and not a good enough “us” person so I like to personalize it with “I and me instead of us and we – sorry for puctuatuion and spelling here, my new rescue kitty is hlping with theh typing.

    he’s a bad typer

  2. Thank you Linda! I love the line “His truth to triumph through us.” It can’t not happen. He’s unstoppable. 🙂 I didn’t expect a post from you today, so thank you for the extra blessing!
