An Ode to Poetry
It’s Day 30 of NaPoWriMo. I’ve written 30 poems in 30 days, and I’ve read many more poems. In celebration of the month coming to an end I wrote an irregular ode to all the poetry I’ve written and read.
An Ode to Poetry
O poetry, you make me laugh
you cause a chuckle to escape my lips
when written by one with a sense of humor
maybe even a chuckle and a half
if the poet who writes your daring words
winnows away the boring chaff
and uses to his advantage a gaffe
O poetry, you often cause a tear
to press against my eyeballs
ready to fall any moment I fear
when a poet writes on a topic dear
and if her writing is especially skillful
it’s possible you’ll find me bawling
if you lend an ear
and I’m touched by the words I hear
O poetry, how you make me think
between my life and another’s is a link
simply from words on a page, a small bit of ink
a connection is made, not there before
a bond of creativity and awe
fostering a desire our glasses to clink
O poetry, you change my mood
you make me crabby if you are lewd
even though I’m not a prude
yet sometimes you are my sunshine
when happiness and mirth you do exude
O poetry, sometimes you bore me
when you’re filled with trite clichés
but please don’t take it personally
I love you nonetheless
Thank you for visiting. This was a fun prompt.
Who needs some old Cathacresis when we can find an Ode over here. Personally, I fear I would burn out if I tried to write a poem a day for a month; quite the achievement.
If all my poems were as long as yours usually are, then I would burn out too. But if you throw in a few elfjes and a clerihew is a lot easier.
This was great. You speak of so many realities of poetry and the online community. I liked the format of your poem.
A great style to this poem. Very readable
Thank you!
Oh yes. The connection that gets formed between a poet and a reader through written word is precious. I liked your playful ode. Well-penned.
Yes, poetry is all of this and more! A great ode to it – and well done for accomplishing a poem a day for a month!
fun – good ending
The poems that can bring a tear because of that fierce connection…are the ones that remain in your heart forever as well!
I like Kanzenkura’s twist — “Owed to Poetry”
I am not a fan of a lot of cliches either, but I found this particular prompt fun!
Happy ending to NaPoWriMo, Linda.
Yes, the prompt sounded fun, but this was already written. I did enjoy reading the other twisted cliché poems.
It is a fitting end to the month of April!!!! Loved reading this! I, too, am amazed by the connections we make, through reading each other’s words.
Poetry is a wonderful thing – an echo of the beauty of life.

Fabulous end to the month Linda. I’ve enjoyed reading your work. See you next year!
Oh, I’ll be writing more poetry before next April, though not every day. I hope you will be, too.
Definitely! I will keep an eye on your blog.
Filling it with cliches is so easy to do..but we just have to massage it a little and the cliches seems fresh and new.
Hey, that rhymes! You wrote a poem and didn’t even know it.
Sure it isn’t…Owed to Poetry? good way to end the NaPoWriMo!
Good one! 😉
A really fitting one to end with!
