Choices
A forced grin
a false I’m okay
are all I’ve got
It’s been three years,
three years today
since you left
with me not knowing
not for sure anyway
where you have gone
Heaven or hell
those are the choices
Which did you choose?

At dVerse Poets Pub today we’re writing Quadrilles with the word “grin.” Because today is the third anniversary of my sister’s untimely death-by-cancer, I knew I wanted to write something about that. Then Bjorn threw me for a loop with the word “grin,” which is generally a happy thing. But sometimes grins aren’t what they appear.
SMiLes.. an

Period..:)
Unfortunately, based on my study of God’s Word, I cannot believe that all people, regardless of whether they accept or reject God, will go to heaven. If someone doesn’t want God here on earth, why would they spend eternity with Him? John 14:6 is clear. A choice must be made, as painful as it may be to see a loved one make the choice to reject God, or to not know what choice they made.
That’s sad my friend.. And that is what relative free will gifted by God allows.. For humans to create hell here as a self-fulfilling prophesy and yes it is real.. already been to hell and live heaven now that the real humble Jesus promised is simply now for those who find tHeir way through the needle of now.. Hope your sister found that as God is not limited to words or other human symbols that are all approximate idols of God’s Full breath.. sMiles.. Hope and Love will always win over fear and hate as God’s rule of Nature with or without human idol words.. With due respect of course.. And SMiles.. As it works.. In practice..:)
So much conveyed in so few words.
I like how you left the poem hanging just like the feelings!
Thanks. Some questions we’ll never know the answer to until we see heaven ourselves. This is one of them.
So true! You are very welcome!
I am so sorry for your loss. It must have been hard to write this poem. I understand the forced grin all too well. An excellent poem.
Thank you.
I see why you were on my heart today. <3 Much love and big hugs.
So true, Linda. The word “grin” is so close to the word “grim,” really…I was touched by this piece. Thank you.
I pray that your longing finds a happy resolution.
Thank you. One can never have too many prayers. Peace, Linda
Quite sad if you aren’t sure! I think we just have to trust God’s love!
So true. She was in my prayers right to the end.
A tough anniversary date for you, Linda, I’m so very sorry.
And because it’s 3 days before my son’s birthday — he turned 18 the year my sister died and will be 21 this year — I’m reminded of that balance between mourning loss and celebrating life that we all must walk.
I think we often try to “grin and bear it” but life/death are not easy. May God give you peace.
This is a powerful, meaningful little poem. I think a longer poem would not have had the impact. Perfect.
I’m so sorry you lost your sister. Writing helps me with my losses- I hope it helps you too
Yes, writing does help. Thanks.
I’ve had a decade to ponder the very question. Still don’t know the answer. Excellent way to use the grin.
Thanks.
Not knowing the Choice that a loved one made (or didn’t make) is, perhaps, more painful than the loss of the person him/herself.
Yes, I believe that is true. I have some indication that she was a believer, but I’m just not sure.
You used grin so appropriately considering the pain of loss that you have experienced. Mine also is a little unexpected.
Sorry for your loss ~ I can imagine the difficult choices ~ And I like the “forced grin” 🙂
Love it… yes grins can mean something artificial… a mask we take on… and how well it worked with your sad thoughts… so terrible to lose a sister.
Excellent poem. Tragic circumstances.
Thanks. I miss her terribly.
It makes it so much worse when you aren’t positive about a person’s beliefs.
