Words from Above – A Poem
The prompt at dVerse Poets Pub yesterday (and still there today) is to write a poem about our thoughts on the failure of language to capture our thoughts and feelings. I immediately thought about the challenge of writing a poem to a specific form, though the poem I penned isn’t to any set form but the one that came to me as I wrote.
If you want to read more poetry, head over the dVerse and check out what’s offered up in the Mr. Linky box.
Words from Above
Writing poetry to form
Struggling to make words conform
To meter and rhyme
A set scheme of repeating lines
Yet still sound sublime
It’s a challenge I love
Splendid words come from above
When self I dethrone
And don’t rely on my own
Desiring God be known
Still language falls short
His grandeur words distort
The best I can do
Is share what I know to be true
To touch a heart or two
Love the “When self I dethrone” line!
Thanks, Eden. I liked that one, too. 🙂 It’s an important step in good writing, I think. Peace, Linda
How true. Writing a poem is a challenge and the satisfaction one gets from hurdling that challenge is priceless.
Sometimes, like you, I wish to write a God-themed poem but I find that words are inadequate to contain the greatness that is God. So, I stop, instead of listen to that voice beyond mine. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by. Listening is definitely important. Peace, Linda
Writing to form is sometimes a true blessing for my inspiration .. Really fun when it works.
I like forms worth repeating lines. If you can get that one line right, it’s golden.
I also find that writing to a form is a challenge. I found it really daunting and it took me a while to attempt it. I enjoyed the honesty and humility of your words. I can say that you have touched my heart with this poem.
The great thing about a poem to form is that when it works it is awesome. I’m glad this non-form poem touched your heart. Peace, Linda
I love it when He writes the poems with us, especially those tough form ones! Thanks for roughing me with your poems! God bless!
Yep, some of my best poetry was not really written by me, but by God. I can only take credit for the bad ones. Peace, Linda
Oh yes, writing form poems is definitely a challenge! But when it is accomplished it is definitely a beautiful thing. I think our language always may fall a little bit short by our own standards, but oftentimes it does touch people. And that is something to be celebrated indeed.
form is def not my fav, i prefer the wildness of words
and setting ourselves aside, and heeding him/his thoughts
and tending his sheep, are def high callings
