Welcome to week #43 of my fun paint chip prompts. I discovered this week that I actually had enough paint chips to make it to the end of the year. So for the rest of the year we will have the full seven paint chips and I will occasionally throw in an angel card.
This Week’s Challenge
Once again I determined our theme from a random page in my book of The Romantic Poets. The poem that starts on page 710 is To Night by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Our paint chip words and phrases are cabin in the woods, deviled eggs, cotton, Aquarius, blossom, showtime, and night owl. The bonus angel card is trust (plus it has a cute unicorn on it that might make its way into someone’s poem). Use however many of these words and phrases you want. I don’t plan to use them all this week, just to mix things up a bit.
My Poem
I haven’t yet read the Shelley poem, so hopefully I’m not stealing his idea. I decided to write my poem as a letter to Night.
Dear Night, I trust that you are doing well as longer you become with each passing day. Your darkness seems to reign and yet I know the time will come when night owls complain the sun stays too long; but not me. I delight in watching the day unfurl at a cabin in the woods, leaving you behind until the hour is late and the sun protests bright and warm; the last ray hangs on in the glory of its Creator. In those days the lupine blossoms and the cottonwood sheds its fluffy seeds. I know it seems unfair that we only picnic when your time is short. You miss out on the deviled eggs, hamburgers, and potato salad. But let's face it: you're just no fun at a picnic. And the longer you stay the colder it gets. You chase us in to warm by the fireplace, with hot cocoa and cookies, maybe a book to read. I guess I must confess: you're okay, Night. Although I prefer the warmth of Day's sun in the midst of summer, you bring your own special charm; a coziness the long days and short nights of summer will never understand. Sincerely, Linda
Your Turn
Now it’s your turn to write a poem on the theme To Night. You can write a letter to Night, like I did, or perhaps an ode. I imagine there are many ways you could go with this one. Post your poem in the comment, either the whole poem or a link to where you posted it on your own blog. And please link back here so your readers can join the fun if they want to. I’m looking forward to reading what you all come up with. (And I do hope to see a unicorn or two).
