Paint Chip Poetry Prompt #6
There is much debate over how many repetitions of an action are required for it to become a habit. But apparently 5 weekly repetitions of writing a poetry prompt are almost not enough. My previous poetry prompts were all written by the Wednesday before the prompt went live on Friday. This week I almost forgot, even though I had the words selected and the picture taken over a week ago. It’s lunch time on Thursday and I’m just getting to it.
I could blame the theme of this week’s prompt and say I was “on the road” and couldn’t get to it earlier, but that wouldn’t be true. Although I do now have Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” stuck in my head now.
Anyway, here are this week’s theme, on the road, and the paint chip words and phrases: sea foam, clear skies, aquarium, pearly gates, stepping stone, monk’s robe, and blood orange.
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a poem about being on the road, literally or metaphorically, using at least 4 of the prompt words. Remember, the phrase on the road doesn’t have to appear in your poem. Extra points if you can manage to use all 7 prompt words. As an alternative, you could write two poems. One using 4 of the words and another using the other 3.
Here’s My Poem
Walking and Driving
Some roads are meant for driving
in a convertible, top down,
hair billowing in the breeze, watching
clear skies above morphing
to pink, then peach
as the blood orange sun
sets above the sea foam waves
along the beach to paradise
Other roads are meant for walking
in a stylish monk’s robe, following
a series of carefully placed
stepping stones, one by one,
step by step past the local aquarium
where fish swim among the coral,
on your way to the pearly gates
Your Turn
Okay, not it’s your turn. Write your poem in the comments below, or on your own blog and put a link in the comments. Or you can write one just for you if you’re not ready to share it, but please do let me know if you have. Paint Chip Poetry is much more fun with lots of players.
A Navigator’s Ode
Clear skies were welcomed by ancient mariners
Dodging rocks in and around the sea foam corridors
The sextant being the instrument of the day
Provided challenges to sailors finding their way
Visions of the Pearly Gates provided some fright
Although a blood orange sky was a delightful sight
Vehicles advanced and instruments did too
But the laws of navigation remain tried and true
The stepping stones of science charted the course
As trains, planes, and automobiles replaced the horse
Aviation and space are the challenges today
And satellite GPS helps us from going astray
As a navigator myself, I subscribe to this ode
And once again I long to be back on the road
Very nice!
