My Divine Defense

My friend Rachel Lulich issued a challenge to write a poem a week based on one of the devotions included in Charles H. Spurgeon’s Faith’s Checkbook. I’m always up for a good challenge, and the devotional was only 99 cents for Kindle, so I decided to give it a try.

My first poem is inspired by the April 7 entry entitled “Without Fear of Man.” My favorite line in this short, one-minute devotional is, “God will sooner empty heaven of angels than leave a saint without defense.” 

I decided to write it as a Pantoum because I liked the added challenge of fitting my poem to one of my favorite poetry forms. Here’s what I came up with.

My Divine Defense

I am a citizen of the Kingdom of God
He’ll never leave me without defense
My soul belongs where angels trod
The assurance He promises is no pretense

He’ll never leave me without defense
Naught man can do will I ever fear
The assurance He promises is no pretense
If I need, angel legions will appear

Naught man can do will I ever fear
Though my faith cause the ungodly hatred
If I need, angel legions will appear
My Precious Lord Jesus at their head

Though my faith cause the ungodly hatred
I pray I might turn many to believe
My Precious Lord Jesus at their head
His great truth to perceive

I pray I might turn many to believe
To be braver than lions for the right
His great truth to perceive
Marching forth in His might

To be braver than lions for the right
