Finding Joy – A Poem
The Poetics prompt over at dVerse Poets Pub today was a challenge to do something with advertising slogans and the promises they make. I immediately thought of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss in which the Once-ler makes thneeds out of truffula trees and claims that they are what all people need. And that thought led me to this poem.
Finding Joy
Whether he’s selling a thneed or a car
he’ll tell you his goods you need to go far
“Happiness lies in this latest new phone,”
declares the announcer in a low-pitched drone
Yesterday’s model is incredibly outdated
You must have the newest to feel elated
A new wardrobe, new iPod, new everything
are a definite requirement to give your life zing
Do you believe these statements are true?
Sadly, to accept them will leave you quite blue
True joy and happiness come from within
Knowing contentment is how you will win
If you trust your Creator you will enjoy
peace, grace, gladness, and joy
For a short period in my life I lived the consumerist, keeping-up-with-the-Joneses lifestyle. It was a depression period that thankfully helped me to see what I was missing. Oh, and any poem referencing Theodor Geisel is okay in my book. =)
Happiness and joy win every time for me. Lovely piece.
oh yes… I found myself pulled into that dark pit of consumption many times… finding i have a wardrobe that will last till I die… sad… and still we are cought… writing poetry helps me at least.
Happiness does come from within – for most of us – and not in personal acquisitions.
Sadly, there are many of us too that are only happy in ownership of the latest gadget, clothing item, etc….
Anna :o]
so true on where joy and happiness come from, it can not be bought, though that is the bit they are sold…all you need is this, you know…smiles…
So true, so many are in search of the next newest thing. Better to look inside oneself for the really Important.
Our secular aspiritual world is on the road to grief…never was there more of a time to rethink renew and return to Christian values.
So thankful for His Joy .. and for your poem! Thanks, Linda, and God bless!
true… happiness and joy come from within and not at all from the clothes brands we wear or the car we drive… there seems to be a counter movement among some young people to go off-brand and that’s hip now…ha..i like that
