My Old Account Is Settled

Last week as I was working on the posts titled Expunging the Record and The Grudge – A Poem, one of my favorite old Gospel songs by Johnny Cash came to mind. It’s called The Old Account. I love this song because it very simply is the Gospel. It reminds me that there used to be a record of my sins – the old account – but that long ago on the cross of Calvary my account was settled and paid.

The first verse is my favorite:

Well there was a time on earth, when in the books of heaven
An old account was standing for sins yet unforgiven.
My name was at the top and many things below,
But I went unto the keeper and settled it long ago.

The chorus is pretty awesome, too:

CHORUS
Long ago (down on my knees) long ago (I settled it all)
Yes the old account was settled long ago (hallelujah)
And the record’s clear today ’cause he washed my sins away,
And the old account was settled long ago.

There was a time when I was unforgiven, but that time is no more. If you are feeling unforgiven, go unto the keeper and settle your account by the blood of the Lamb. Then you will know that the record is clear today because our dear Jesus washed your sins away.

I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do.
