My Little Dog and His Ball – A Poem

I’m sitting here on Wednesday evening trying to think of what to write for my Thankful Thursday poem. I’m not feeling very thankful. In fact, I’m tired and feeling kind of crabby.

Then my little dog Roman (named for the book of Romans) brightens my day. I am thankful for my little dog because he can always make me smile no matter how my day has gone. He is always loving and loyal. So I decided to write my Thankful Thursday poem about him.

My Little Dog and His Ball

He brings me his red tennis ball to throw,
wagging his tail as he tosses the ball
up onto the couch next to me.

How does he toss his ball
so far up on the couch
with his mouth?

He turns, faces the direction
he knows I will throw the ball,
head down like a pointer.
He waits patiently.
So very patiently.

As soon as the ball leaves my hand
for the other end of the hall,
he’s off, running at full gallop.

He obtains his prize and trots back,
tail wagging,
smiling with the ball in his mouth,
to start the game all over again.

Occasionally he drops the ball
on the floor at my feet.
I shake my head.
“I can’t reach it. Give,” I say.
He picks it up,
tosses it next to me.

I smile, too,
as I throw the ball
again and again,
until he tires out,
jumps up on the couch
and curls up next to me.

Little does he know
I hadn’t smiled all day
until now.

I am a Jesus Freak, and I don't care who knows it. I am a wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend. My blood family is only part of the larger family of Christ that I belong to. I love to write, especially about my dear Savior.

  1. How true that is about dogs… eager to please, making us smile.

I have a theory that God created the dogs as a gift to his people… created on the same day as humans and with endless variety, an unmatched way of calming us, and for Adam, the joy of naming the dogs and more.

I hope it’s okay if I add little ball-chasing Roman to my doggie prayer list, where I pray every night that God would keep them safe from harm, free of sickness and disease, and bless us with a long life of shared happiness.

I pray for about a dozen dogs, couldn’t be happier to do it. : )

Such silliness, you and Roman. A great poem! : )

  2. I’m so glad you have Roman! 🙂 We don’t have a dog any more, but were housesitting again this last Wed. through Sunday, so get to be blessed by their dogs. Those little faces and eyes and how they turn their heads trying so hard to understand what I’m saying. . .Definitely a gift and something to be thankful for!
God bless you and your special friend with fur!
