Unceasing Prayer – A Poem

Continuing on with my thoughts on prayer, I decided I would write a poem about how thankful I am for prayer and for the strength and wisdom God grants me through prayer. I know that without prayer my life is much more stressful and overwhelming.

The other day I received a Martin Luther quote in my Quotemeal email that said, “I have so much to do [today] that I should spend the first three hours in prayer.” Most days are like that, though I certainly don’t find time for three hours of just prayer. The alternative is to spend at least part of my focused prayer time in the morning asking God to help me always be aware of His voice and to practice the unceasing prayer that comes from knowing He will never leave me.

Unceasing Prayer

Up in the morning, I’ve places to go
N
o time to waste, so to my knees I fall
C
ounting on Jesus, praising Him first
E
ver in worship and love I do call
A
lpha and Omega, the beginning and end
S
in I’m confessing, forgiveness I seek
I
mploring His will to be done all the day
N
ot wanting my will to prevail, I am meek
G
etting up from my knees, I go forth in His strength

Pray without ceasing, the Scriptures teach
R
unning on empty, I’d surely fail, but
A
lways thoughts of praise guide my speech
Y
earning and learning to listen to Him
E
ver my actions His love and mercy preach
R
est for my soul in His never-failing presence

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come.”

Revelation 4:6-8 (NIV).
